How to Close a Pool for Winter: The Professional Closing Procedure

Closing a pool is not a list of tasks. It is a sequence, and the order carries most of the value. Almost every problem that turns up at a spring opening - a cracked pump housing, a filter that will not hold pressure, four feet of water the colour of a pond - traces back to something done in the wrong order the previous autumn, or done on the wrong day.
What follows is the procedure as a professional runs it, with the reasoning attached rather than left implicit. If you are closing your own pool it will get you through the job properly. If you are a technician learning the work, or an owner about to sell closings across a route, the last section deals with the part nobody writes about: how a six to eight week closing window behaves when you have sixty of them booked.

- Preparing a pool to sit unused and uncirculated through freezing weather. In the trade "winterizing" and "closing" are used for the same job. It covers three separate tasks that are often confused: getting the water chemistry to a state that survives months without filtration, removing every trace of water from plumbing and equipment so nothing can freeze and expand, and covering the pool so debris and sunlight stay out until spring.
Those two words cause more confusion than they should. A customer asking to have the pool winterized and a customer asking to have it closed are asking for the same visit, and no supplier or manufacturer draws a line between them either. The only distinction worth making is regional: in a mild climate there is nothing to winterize, and what people call a closing is really a seasonal reduction in run time and service frequency. When to close: the water tells you, not the calendar
The working rule is to close once the water temperature is holding below roughly 65 degrees and not climbing back up. That number is not arbitrary. Below it, the algae and bacteria that drive most winter water problems slow down sharply, so the chemistry you leave behind has far less work to do over four months with no filtration.
Close too early and you are asking a warm, biologically active pool to sit sealed in the dark. Chlorine burns off fast at 75 degrees, algae keeps growing under a cover, and the customer opens in May to a swamp - and blames the closing, correctly. Close too late and you are gambling with a hard freeze against full plumbing, which is a repair bill rather than a chemistry problem. Of the two mistakes, closing early is far more common and closing late is far more expensive.
Check the water, not the air
Air temperature swings twenty degrees in a day; a body of water does not. Take the reading at mid-afternoon, a foot below the surface, on two or three separate visits before you commit. A pool that reads 62 on a cold Tuesday and 71 on the following Saturday is not ready.
Balance the water days before you close it, not on the day
This is the step most often collapsed into the closing visit itself, and it is the one that does the most damage when rushed. Balancing chemicals need circulation to distribute and time to react. Pour them in an hour before you shut the pump down and much of what you added is still sitting in a plume near the return, doing nothing, while the pool as a whole is unchanged.
Test and correct two to five days ahead with the pump running normally, then re-test on the closing visit and make only small adjustments. What you are protecting against is not really algae - it is scale and corrosion. Water sitting for four months out of balance will either deposit calcium on the tile and the interior finish or start pulling metal out of the heater and the light housing. Neither is visible until spring, and both are expensive.

The closing procedure, in the order it has to happen
Everything below assumes an in-ground pool in a climate that freezes. The differences for above-ground pools and for mild climates come after.

Clean the pool properly first
Brush the walls and steps, vacuum to waste if the load is heavy, and skim the surface. Any organic debris you leave behind spends the winter decomposing and consuming the chlorine you are about to add. A pool closed dirty is a pool that opens green no matter what you dosed it with.

Remove and store everything that comes out
Ladders and handrails, skimmer and pump baskets, solar cover and reel, automatic cleaner, eyeball fittings, thermometers, floating dispensers. Rails left in place through a freeze can be pushed out of their anchors by ice. Anything with water trapped in it will crack.

Lower the water to the level the cover requires
This is dictated by the cover type, not by preference. A mesh safety cover passes rain and snowmelt straight through, so the level goes below the skimmer mouth and stays there. A solid cover keeps water out and needs a cover pump, so the level is usually taken down less. Draining a pool completely is almost never right and can float the shell.

Clean the filter and open every drain
Backwash a sand or DE filter, or pull and rinse the cartridge. Then open the drain plugs on the filter, the pump, the heater and any chlorinator, and leave them out. Put the plugs somewhere they will still be findable in April - a bag zip-tied to the pump or dropped in the pump basket, which is why the basket comes off the pool and goes to the pad.

Clear the plumbing and seal the returns
This is the step that decides whether the customer gets a repair bill. Blow the lines out from the equipment pad with a shop blower or compressor until each return pushes steady air, then plug it while the air is still moving. Do the skimmer lines the same way and set a skimmer plug or a foam gizmo. In hard-freeze regions, pool antifreeze goes into the lines after they are cleared - it is insurance against the water you did not get out, not a substitute for clearing them.

Shock the pool and let it come down
Oxidise the water to burn off the organic load that is already in it. Then wait. A heavy chlorine residual will oxidise a polymer algaecide as readily as it oxidises algae, which is how operators end up paying for algaecide twice.

Add the winter chemicals in the right order
Once the chlorine has fallen back toward a normal level, add a long-acting algaecide and, where the fill water carries iron or copper, a stain and scale preventer. Distribute around the perimeter rather than dumping at one point - there is no circulation to do it for you, and a concentrated dose sitting on a plaster floor can leave a mark that outlasts the winter.

Set the cover and secure it properly
A safety cover straps to anchors set in the deck and should be tensioned evenly, not drum-tight at one corner and slack at the next. A water-bag cover needs bags filled to roughly three-quarters so they have room to expand when they freeze, laid end to end with no gaps for wind to get under. A cover that lifts in a January storm undoes the whole visit.
Two pieces of equipment deserve more attention than the sequence above gives them. Heaters hold water in places a blower does not always reach, particularly around the header and the pressure switch, so they get their own drain plugs pulled and their own pass with the air. A heater that cracks over winter is the most expensive single failure a closing can cause, and it fails silently - nobody knows until April.
Salt chlorine generators are the other one. The cell comes out, gets inspected and rinsed, and goes somewhere dry rather than staying on the pad through a freeze. It is a five-minute job at closing and a several-hundred-dollar part if it is skipped, and because the cell is the component customers understand least, it is also the one they are least likely to ask about.
Anything with a variable-speed pump or an automation panel should also be left in a known state rather than simply switched off at the breaker, and the state it is left in should be written down. Coming back to a system in April with no record of how it was configured in October turns a ninety-minute opening into a half-day.
The one step that cannot be half-done
Chemistry mistakes cost a customer an extra opening visit. Water left in a pump volute, a heater header or a return line costs them the part. If you are short on daylight and something has to move to another day, move the chemicals, never the lines.
What changes for above-ground pools and mild climates
The chemistry is the same everywhere. The mechanical half is where the job diverges, and closing an above-ground pool the way you would close an in-ground one is a good way to damage a liner.

Mild-climate pools are generally not closed at all. They move to a reduced run time and a lighter service frequency, which is a scheduling change rather than a closing.
The air pillow on an above-ground pool is the detail people skip because it looks decorative. It is not. It sits under the cover and takes the load when the surface freezes and expands, so the ice pushes inward against the pillow rather than outward against the wall. A pillow that has deflated by February is a wall that spends the rest of the winter unprotected.
Mesh or solid: the cover decides how the spring opening goes
Customers choose a cover on price and appearance. What they are actually choosing is how much work the opening will be, and whether anyone has to visit the pool between November and April.

- A pool of standing water on a solid cover is a genuine drowning hazard, particularly with children or pets on the property.
- Heavier and more awkward to remove and store, and water bags degrade and split.
For a service business the distinction matters commercially as well. Solid-cover accounts generate winter callouts - a cover pump that has failed, a sagging cover after a heavy week of rain - and those visits are either an unbilled favour or a line item you agreed in advance. It is worth deciding which before the first storm rather than during it.

Before the closing visit

A closed pool is not a finished job, it is an unattended one. Four things account for most of what people find in spring, and three of them are visible from the street if anyone bothers to look.
The first is the water level. A pool that loses water over the winter is telling you something - usually a plumbing leak that was there in September and was not obvious while the pool was being topped up automatically. If the level falls below the tile line and then freezes, the ice works directly against grout and plaster instead of against a body of water, and the damage shows up as a band of failed tile at exactly the height the water sat. It is worth a drive-past in January on any pool with a history of top-ups.
The second is the cover under load. Solid covers collect rain and snowmelt and the weight rises fast; a cover pump that has failed or frozen turns into several hundred pounds of standing water sitting in the middle of the sheet, which stretches it, drags the edges inward and eventually pulls the whole thing into the pool along with everything on top of it. Mesh covers do not have that failure mode but they do sag, and a sagging mesh cover that touches the water surface is no longer keeping debris out.
The third is the equipment pad. A pump with the plugs out and the lid off is a dry, sheltered box, and rodents treat it exactly that way over a cold winter. Wiring in a heater or a control panel is the usual casualty and it is not discovered until somebody tries to fire the system up in April. Leaving the pump lid loosely in place rather than off entirely, and keeping the pad clear of leaf litter, removes most of the attraction.
The fourth is chemistry, and it is the one people expect. A mesh-covered pool that was closed a fortnight too early will be green by March regardless of what went into it, because the algaecide was fighting light and warmth for the first month instead of sitting in cold, dark water doing nothing. That is not an argument for a heavier dose. It is an argument for closing on the temperature reading.
The winter drive-past is cheap insurance
A single loop past the covered accounts after the first serious storm takes an afternoon and catches the failures while they are still cheap: a pooled solid cover, a cover that has come loose at one corner, a water level that has visibly dropped. Whether that visit is billed or absorbed is a decision worth making in September, not in January with a customer on the phone.
Running closing season across a route
One closing is a two-hour job. Sixty closings is a different problem entirely, because they all have to happen inside the same six to eight week window, that window is set by weather rather than by your calendar, and it lands on top of the leaf drop that is already doubling the time each maintenance stop takes.
The two steps operators skip are the first and the last, and they are the two that decide the margin.
Sell in August. Once the first cold week arrives every customer decides at once, and you spend the season taking bookings instead of doing the work. An offer that goes out in the second half of August, when nobody else is asking, fills most of the schedule before the rush and lets you sequence it rather than react to it.
Book by geography, not by who called first. A closing is a long stop, so the drive time between them is a smaller share of the day than on a maintenance run - but with sixty of them, sequencing by neighbourhood still recovers days across the season. Group the safety covers together too, because they generally need two people and it is easier to run a two-tech day than to pull a second person out of a route repeatedly.

Price the closing as its own job with its own scope, not as a variation on a maintenance stop. Cover type, pool size and whether the equipment pad has a heater all move the labour materially, and a single flat closing price across a mixed book means the safety-cover customers are being subsidised by everyone else. If the number has not moved in a few seasons, the same reasoning that applies to reviewing a maintenance rate applies here, and a seasonal job is an easier place to change a price than a recurring one.
Put the scope in writing before the season, including what happens if a cover pump fails in January and who is paying for the visit. Seasonal work generates more billing disputes than recurring work does, precisely because it is not routine - the customer has no reference point for what a closing includes. Spelling out inclusions, exclusions and the winter callout position on the invoice itself removes almost all of the argument, and it removes it before the argument starts.
One regulatory note worth checking before you sell closings as a line of work. Draining, plumbing changes and heater work sit closer to the licensed trades than routine cleaning does in several states, and the boundary is drawn differently depending on what the work is and whose pool it is. Take the spring booking at the closing visit. You are already on the property, the customer is already thinking about the pool, and an opening booked in October costs nothing to acquire. An opening sold in March costs a phone call, a follow-up and often a discount. It is the cheapest work on the whole calendar and it is the piece most routes leave on the table.
Whatever you use to run the route, the thing worth building this month is the record: which pool has which cover, where the plugs were stored, what the water read on the day, and a photograph of the pad before you touched it.
