Pool Filter Cleaning: How to Do It Properly, and When to Stop

A pool filter is the only piece of equipment on the pad whose job is to get worse at its job. Every hour it runs it collects more of what it is meant to collect, and the better it is working the faster it loads up. That is not a fault. It is the whole design. The fault is treating it as a fixture that gets attention when something goes wrong, rather than as a consumable that has a service interval and, eventually, an end.
Most of what goes wrong with filter cleaning comes down to two confusions. The first is between rinsing and cleaning: a hose knocks the surface debris off an element and drops the pressure enough to feel like progress, while the material that is actually restricting flow stays exactly where it is. The second is between a dirty filter and a finished one. An element that has been cleaned thirty times and never comes back to its original pressure is not dirty. It is worn out, and every further hour spent cleaning it is spent on a part that is not going to recover.
This is the procedure for each of the three media, what a proper clean involves as opposed to what most people do, and how to tell the difference between an element that needs another soak and one that needs replacing. It closes with the part that matters to anyone running a route rather than one pool: filter cleaning is a scheduled labour cost, and it behaves very differently depending on whether you plan it or wait for it.
The filter tells you when — and it is not the calendar
Every filter has a pressure it reads when it is clean, with that pump, that plumbing and that gauge. As the media loads, flow through it drops and the pressure upstream of the restriction climbs. The gauge is therefore not measuring dirt directly — it is measuring resistance, which is the thing you actually care about, because resistance is what stops the pool turning its water over.

- The reading on the filter's pressure gauge immediately after the media has been properly cleaned and the system has been restarted and purged of air. It is specific to one pool and one pump, and it is the only number that makes any later reading interpretable. Without it, a gauge showing a given pressure tells you nothing at all about whether the filter is loaded.
This is why the absolute number on the gauge is close to useless on its own. The same reading can mean a perfectly clean filter on one pool and a badly blinded one on the next, because the pumps and the plumbing runs are different. What you are looking for is the rise above that pool's own clean start. Every filter manufacturer specifies a figure at which cleaning is due, it is printed in the manual, and it differs between models — which is a good argument for reading the label on the tank rather than carrying one rule of thumb across a whole route.
The practical consequence is that the clean starting pressure has to be recorded somewhere a technician who is not you can find it. Written on the tank in marker is crude and works. Recorded against the property in whatever system holds your service history is better, because it survives the tank being replaced and it lets you see the trend: a clean start that has been creeping upward season over season is an element aging, not a filter that needs cleaning again.
Two symptoms are worth treating as a cleaning trigger regardless of what the gauge says. Weak return flow with a normal-looking pressure usually means the restriction is on the suction side rather than in the filter, and it is worth finding before you strip anything. And water that stays hazy after the chemistry has been corrected points at filtration whatever the gauge reads — that is the single most common reason a pool will not clear.
Three media, three different jobs
The three filter types in residential service do not simply differ in how finely they filter. They fail differently, they are cleaned differently, and the amount of a technician's time they consume over a season is not the same. Knowing which one is in front of you before you open anything saves a wasted trip for the tool or the consumable you did not bring.

Descriptions of cleaning method and failure mode reflect standard residential pool service practice. Service intervals and pressure triggers are specified per model by the manufacturer and are not generalised here.
One row deserves reading twice. Sand is the only medium whose characteristic failure is invisible on the gauge, and it is therefore the one most likely to have a technician treating the water for weeks on a pool whose filter stopped working months earlier. A sand pool that stays hazy through a correct chemistry correction, with a pressure reading that looks entirely healthy, should have the bed itself treated as the suspect.
Cleaning a cartridge filter
The cartridge is the medium that rewards doing it properly and punishes doing it quickly, because the part of the element that does the filtering is the part a hose cannot reach. Fine silt, sunscreen and body oils work down into the base of the pleats and pack there, and the outside of the element can look entirely acceptable while flow through it has dropped by a large fraction.

Shut the pump down and release the pressure
Open the air relief valve on the filter head and let it bleed until water stops and the gauge reads zero. A tank opened under pressure can throw the lid. Nothing else on this list is dangerous; this step is.

Note the pressure before you do anything
One reading, three seconds, and it is the only way anyone will ever know how loaded this filter was when you got to it. Without it you cannot tell next time whether the interval you are using is right.

Open the tank and lift the element out
Keep track of the lid O-ring. A dry, nicked or displaced lid O-ring will draw air once the system restarts, and a pump running half full moves a fraction of the water it should — which will look exactly like a filter you failed to clean.

Rinse from the top down, into the pleats, not across them
Angle the nozzle down into each fold and work around the element. A fan spray held square to the outside pushes debris deeper into the pleat rather than lifting it out. Start at the top so what you dislodge runs downward and off.

Spread the pleats and inspect against the light
This is the decision point. Material that is dusty and loose will come out with a rinse. Material that is grey, greasy and packed into the base of the fold will not, whatever you do with a hose, and the element needs a soak instead.

Check the end caps, the banding and the core
A separated end cap, a collapsed core or pleats that have gone soft and lie flat against each other all mean the element is at the end of its life. An element in that condition passes water without filtering it, and no amount of cleaning changes that.

Reassemble, restart, purge the air and record the new pressure
Hold the air relief open until a steady stream of water comes out with no sputtering, then close it. The reading you take after that is the pool's new clean starting pressure, and it is the number the next visit will be judged against.
Two elements on one pool changes the arithmetic in your favour. A second set that lives in the truck or in the customer's shed means you swap the dirty one out, leave a clean one in, and take the loaded element away to soak on your own time rather than standing at the pad waiting for it. The pool is back to full flow before you drive away and the soak happens without a second trip.
Rinse, soak, or replace
These are three different decisions and they are often collapsed into one. A rinse handles ordinary loading between services. A soak is a periodic reset that dissolves what a rinse structurally cannot reach. Replacement is what happens when the soak stops working. Treating the whole thing as cleaning the filter is how elements end up being nursed for a year past the point of usefulness.

A soak means the element fully submerged in a filter cleaning solution, left for the period the product specifies — usually overnight — then rinsed thoroughly before it goes anywhere near the tank. Gloves and safety glasses, and the solution kept well away from anything else you carry, particularly chlorine products. Rinse until the water running off is clear, because cleaning solution carried back into the pool is its own small problem.
Oils and scale need different solutions
A degreasing filter cleaner lifts sunscreen and body oils. A mild acid treatment dissolves mineral scale on a pool with hard water. They are not the same product and they should never be mixed or used in sequence without a full rinse between them. If an element comes back from a degreaser still stiff and chalky rather than greasy, scale is what is left and it needs the other treatment.
Replacing the element rather than cleaning it again

The test for a finished element is simple and worth applying deliberately rather than by feel: after a full soak and a thorough rinse, does the filter come back to something near the clean starting pressure it held when the element was new? If it does, the element is fine and the interval is what needs adjusting. If it comes back well above that, and did the same last time, the element is worn and no further cleaning will change it. Pleated media loses its structure gradually; the fibres relax, the pores open, and it stops holding the fine particles that were the reason for having a filter at all.
Backwashing a sand filter is not the same as cleaning it
Backwashing reverses the flow through the bed so that water enters from below, lifts and separates the sand, and carries the trapped debris out through the waste line. It is quick, it needs no disassembly, and it is genuinely the routine maintenance a sand filter asks for. What it does not do is address the failure mode that actually takes sand filters out of service.

The rinse step is the one most often skipped, and skipping it sends the first of the resettled sand straight back to the pool.
Turning a multiport valve while the pump is running is the way to destroy the valve's internal spider gasket, and it is the single most common self-inflicted repair on a sand system. Stop the pump every time, including for the short move from backwash to rinse. The rinse position exists to let the disturbed bed settle and seat before filtered water goes back to the pool, and thirty seconds of it prevents the cloud of fines that otherwise arrives in the pool the moment you switch back.
Channelling is invisible on the gauge
Over time, water carves preferred routes through a sand bed and most of the flow stops contacting sand at all. Because those channels are low-resistance, pressure can sit at a perfectly normal reading while filtration has effectively stopped. A sand pool that stays hazy after the chemistry is right and the pressure looks fine is the classic presentation. The answer is a deep clean of the media or replacement of the bed, not another backwash and not more product in the water.
Sand also ages. The grains start angular, which is what lets them trap fine particles, and years of flow wears them round and smooth. Rounded sand filters visibly worse than new sand at the same pressure, which is another way a pool can be hazy with an apparently healthy filter. Replacement is a job rather than a visit, so it belongs on a planned list rather than being discovered on a Friday afternoon.
Stripping and recharging a DE filter
A DE filter is the finest of the three and the one whose failures are most often procedural rather than mechanical. The grids are only the scaffolding; the actual filtering is done by a coat of powder held against them, which means that every time you backwash you have removed the filter medium and have to put it back.

Backwashing between strip-downs is normal, and so is recharging with fresh powder afterwards, through the skimmer, at the quantity the tank is rated for. Underdosing leaves bare fabric that passes fine particles and, worse, lets debris pack into the cloth where it is hard to remove. Overdosing wastes powder and drives the pressure up straight away. The rated quantity is on the tank, and it is worth reading rather than estimating with a scoop.
Periodically the tank has to come apart properly: the clamp band off, the assembly lifted out, and every grid rinsed front and back until the spent powder is gone. While it is out, hold each grid up and look for tears, split seams and pulled stitching. A torn grid is the explanation for the pool that clouds slightly every time it is backwashed and then slowly clears again — powder is going straight through the damaged grid and out of the returns. Check the standpipe and the manifold at the same time, because a cracked manifold does the same thing and is easy to miss.
What filter cleaning costs a route
On one pool, filter cleaning is a chore. Across a book of business it is a line of labour with a shape, and the shape depends almost entirely on whether it is scheduled or reactive. A planned clean is a short extra stop on a day you are already in that area. An unplanned one is a special trip to an address you were not going to be near, generally on a day when a customer is already unhappy, and frequently followed by a second trip because the element needed soaking and you had not brought a spare.
That makes filter cleaning a scheduling problem more than a technical one. Put the interval on the property rather than in memory, group the pools due in the same area into the same week, and carry spare elements for the sizes that recur most on your route so that a soak never costs a second visit. It is the same arithmetic that governs everything else about how a route is priced: the work on site is rarely the expensive part, and the driving is.
Filter cleaning on the same route, run two ways

It is also worth watching as a number rather than a feeling. If filter work is quietly consuming a rising share of the week, that shows up long before it becomes obvious — in stops per day drifting down and in the same addresses reappearing. Those are exactly the kind of things that a weekly look at a handful of route metrics catches while it is still a scheduling fix rather than a hiring decision. And a pool that keeps coming back hazy after the filter has been done properly is telling you the cloudiness has a different cause entirely, which is worth ruling out before another element goes in the tub.
