CPO certification by state
CPO Certification in Arizona
Arizona has no statewide certified-operator rule that we could confirm, so counties set it. Pima County requires a certified operator and runs its own class.
Who sets the rules
Counties set the requirement. Pima County Code 8.32 requires a certified operator, and we found no equivalent in Maricopa County's code.
What the rules say
- Pima County's certification class costs $30 and leads to a county credential rather than a CPO.
- Maricopa County's code doesn't include an operator certification requirement that we could find.
Running a pool service business
- Residential pool service and repair falls under the Registrar of Contractors' R-6 licence, which doesn't cover gas lines or electrical work beyond the first disconnect.
- Jobs under $1,000 that don't need a permit can fall under the handyman exemption, and the business's advertising then has to say it is not a licensed contractor.
Getting certified in Arizona
CPO classes run in person, as a blended online course with a shorter in-person day, and in formats that keep the exam proctored. The CPO certification guide explains the formats, typical costs and renewal, and how to find a class near you.

The absence of a statewide operator rule comes from a secondary source, and whether a chemical-only route needs an R-6 licence wasn't confirmed. Check with your county health department and the Registrar of Contractors.
